The collision of two worlds in a powerful symphonic afternoon: one ruled by fate, the other by damnation. Under José Eduardo Gomes, the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra and the Choir of the National Theatre of São Carlos explore the existential conflicts of Schnittke and Tchaikovsky, revealing how anguish turns into revelation through music.
Schnittke’s Faust Cantata (1983) revisits the earliest Faust legend in a bold fusion of sacred and profane styles, Baroque echoes, and modernist intensity. Its infamous finale — a grotesque tango sung by the Devil — mocks human folly and celebrates chaos. Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 (1877) confronts fate itself. Born of personal turmoil, it moves from despair to affirmation, culminating in a folk-inspired finale that embraces life despite destiny’s shadow.
Together, these works illuminate the eternal human struggle: the search for meaning between surrender and transcendence.
