Sexta Maior
Bach and the Violin is the theme of this concert by Ensemble Diderot and Johannes Pramsohler —a reminder that Bach was not only a brilliant keyboard player, but also a skilled violinist who played «purely and penetratingly». His first major appointment came as a violinist in Weimar, leading to key roles as concertmaster and director of court orchestras in Weimar, Köthen, and Leipzig.
Bach’s own violin concertos were likely written for these ensembles, where he also performed music by his admired contemporaries. Among them were Telemann and Vivaldi, whose lively concertos for three violins highlight the vibrant musical dialogue of the time and the central role of the violin in Bach’s world.
