The Da Pele series comprises a set of sound installations (A Teia da Pele and A Memória da Pele) developed from research centred on the adufe, first undertaken and presented at MATSDAY as part of the Master’s in Arts and Sound Technologies at ESMAE (Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espectáculo). Hands bring the adufes to life. When placed within a relational web, a single movement or breath is enough to set off a self-sustaining motion that is difficult to stop: a flood of beats and voices that gain strength through connection and multiplication. This is the power of the ensemble: the collective and its memory, embodied in a simple instrument made of four wooden boards and a skin.
