The distance between the austerity of Lutheran piety and the fervent &#8220;emotionalism&#8221; of the Mediterranean may seem insurmountable. Yet Bach so admired the compositions of his Neapolitan counterparts that he created his own &#8220;parodies&#8221; of them in his work.
