This is beautifully demonstrated by the orchestral symphonic poem\u00a0<em>An American in Paris<\/em>, the same music that\u00a0Vincente Minnelli made famous in the film with the same name starring Gene Kelly. And everyone knows the opera <em>Porgy and Bess<\/em>, from 1935, and, above all, the song <em>Summertime<\/em>. On stage, the music accompanies the representation of a tragic love story that portrays the life of black communities in the southern United States a century ago \u2013 \u201csummarised\u201d by the composer himself in his orchestral suite <em>Catfish Row<\/em>.
