SUMMARY:Porto Santo School
DESCRIPTION:In the 1960s a school was built on the arid and remote island of Porto Santo. Against a backdrop of scarcity\, the architect\, Raúl Chorão Ramalho\, took advantage of the environmental and material conditions of the place to enhance the characteristics of the building. A modern language – in tune with the vanguard of the time – allied itself with the identity of local construction\, to anchor the public building to the ground. The school served as a space of learning for several generations of Porto Santo inhabitants\, and today\, classified as a heritage site\, it hosts a programme of activities and artistic residencies that project it into the future.
