SUMMARY:MGD on TV
DESCRIPTION:From 1992 to 1996\, over four seasons\, Portuguese architecture was a regular presence on the small screen and earned enthusiastic attention from the press – owing to architect Manuel Graça Dias (1953-2019)\, who brightened up our cultural landscape with his cheerful tone\,  enthusiasm\, and irreverence. Throughout the four-year run of Ver Artes Graça Dias interviewed architects\, showed all manner of buildings\, discussed cities\, brought veritable masterpieces to the public’s attention\, and all in all threw ideas and concepts on the table at a time when Portuguese architecture was at a peak – Álvaro Siza already a household name\, yet Chiado still a ruin. Graça Dias’s documentary-style show Ver Artes brought architecture to the small screen as an everyday-life topic\, with aluminium framing\, Lisbon nightlife\, the minute specificities of stone-cutting\, the garishness of neon\, city traffic\, and the three-dimensional language of buildings all tossed together in the same bag. In the intervening decades the world has changed\, but more than a wistful look at the tail-end of the 20th century\, Graça Dias’s short documentaries produced for TV offer us insight on how language and the skill to communicate are crucial to affect our ongoing perception of the world.
