SUMMARY:DSCH – Schostakovich Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:The internationally acclaimed DSCH – Shostakovich Ensemble presents a concert devoted to two of the main Russian composers: Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich. For this concert\, DCSH’s artistic director\, Filipe Pinto-Ribeiro\, considered one of the great European pianists of his generation\, is joined by two leading international musicians: the Canadian violinist Karen Gomyo\, a regular presence in the great American\, European and Asian concert halls\, accompanied by her famous Stradivarius Aurora violin\, from 1703\, and the cellist Kyril Zlotnikov\, the founder of the Jerusalem Quartet and with an impressive award-winning discography\, which includes the complete Mozart Trios\, for EMI\, with Daniel Barenboim. \nTrio No. 1\, by Shostakovich\, entitled Poem\, is his first work of chamber music\, composed in 1923\, at the age of just 17\, when he was a student at the Conservatory of Petrograd (the old St. Petersburg). The genesis of this Trio\, with its great technical quality and expressiveness\, is related with the composer’s personal circumstances: it is dedicated to Tatiana Glivenko\, whom the young Shostakovich met in Crimea\, in the summer of 1923\, and with whom he enjoyed his first intense love affair until 1929. It is a short piece\, lasting roughly 10 minutes\, unlike Tchaikovsky’s monumental Trio op. 50\, subtitled In Memory of a Great Artist. This is the only Trio that Tchaikovsky composed\, a masterpiece that is considered to be his main chamber music composition. It is dedicated to the memory of his friend Nikolai Rubinstein\, the great pianist and founder of the famous Moscow Conservatory\, who died suddenly in Paris\, at the age of just 45. His death\, in 1881\, had a most distressing effect on Tchaikovsky\, and\, at the end of that same year\, in Rome\, the composer devoted his energies to composing Trio op. 50\, which\, although it was strangely neglected for some time\, became one of the most profound and delightful homages of Musical Romanticism.
