Conference

In these troubled times arising from the great moral, physical and material difficulties caused by the worldwide pandemic, we are also witnessing two major trends in the intellectual field which mutually ignore one another and are very often in conflict for negative reasons: a profusion of publications and reflections that focus on the current situation and the different warnings that this has given or may yet give rise to in relation to the total restructuring that will be necessary in all the domains that we have previously taken for granted; the continuation of research projects that, without avoiding any immediate problematics, consider it preferable to contribute to the preparation of the theoretical and practical field that, in an imprecise, but nonetheless legitimate, fashion, we have come to refer to as the “future world”. In fact, these two trends are interlinked and can never be mutually exclusive, no matter what fields of reflection and implementation they are concerned with. Among them, the world of the arts has been particularly badly affected (cancellations, closures, rescheduling), but even worse hit has been the field of aesthetics, aisthesis, or the sensitive world. From the simplest acts of everyday life to theoretical complexities, our personal and inter-human sensitivity, just like our relationship with the sensitive world in which we have evolved and in which we live, feel and exist, gives rise to reactions that also form part of a restructuring appropriate to the present and to a future that is more or less close at hand.

It is this aesthetic mode of our relationship with the world, with the living, with others – which takes on countless forms, including art, although there are also many more – to which we wish to devote a series of talks that, without covering all aspects of the different domains of knowledge, are intended to reveal some clues and to indicate possible perspectives. How should we think about the sensitive world and aesthetics in these more or less brief, distended, distressing or promising times? What may be their aims, their projects or their unknown features? Does aesthetics itself have the capacity to make a decisive contribution to the events of the present time and to those that may yet come to happen? Shouldn’t the radical transformations of what was previously or is now understood by aisthesis keep pace with the considerable changes taking place in our societies and, in a broader sense, in people? Other problematics may obviously be suggested, but, given the vocation of the Centro Cultural de Belém – the institution that invites, organises and essentially enshrines all forms of art – these should be able to directly or indirectly deal with questions linked with aesthetics, in its broader sense, in its relations with economics, politics, ecology, feminism, cosmopolitanism….
