Traversing the gamut of Sandback’s lexicon and bringing into dialogue works from 1967 to 2003—including his celebrated sculptures, as well as lesser-known aspects of his production such as drawings, prints, wood reliefs, and text works—Threading Space explores the full spectrum of the renowned American artist’s work in an unprecedented solo exhibition in Portugal. For more than three decades, Sandback built a vibrant oeuvre based on economy of means and stillness, utilising lines in space to construct, articulate, and define particular situations. He developed a new language that coalesces sculpture, drawing, performance, and architecture, while inviting a viewing experience of play and pleasure that goes beyond the visual and recruits body and mind. Combining attributes that rarely overlap—openness and confinement, void and substance, reality and illusion, presence and absence, inside and outside—Sandback’s art encourages us to think through and beyond deep-rooted binary oppositions.
Curated by Lilian Tone, Threading Space is organised with the support of the Fred Sandback Estate and the Fred Sandback Archive.
