Exhibition
In the 1960s a school was built on the arid and remote island of Porto Santo. Against a backdrop of scarcity, the architect, Raúl Chorão Ramalho, took advantage of the environmental and material conditions of the place to enhance the characteristics of the building. A modern language – in tune with the vanguard of the time – allied itself with the identity of local construction, to anchor the public building to the ground. The school served as a space of learning for several generations of Porto Santo inhabitants, and today, classified as a heritage site, it hosts a programme of activities and artistic residencies that project it into the future. This exhibition presents the environment, matter, habitat and architecture of this singular work.
