Six years after The Tempest and nine years after A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Teatro Praga will be completing what has always been thought of as a trilogy, with another partnership between Shakespeare and Purcell. Timon of Athens is a musical composition by Henry Purcell, dated 1694, written at the invitation of Thomas Shadwell, who adapted Shakespeare’s text and commissioned a “masque” from the young Purcell. A “masque” involved music, dance, song and theatre, with elaborate sets and sumptuous costumes. The masquers were often courtiers, and sometimes the king himself, accompanied by professional actors and singers. Using baroque music combined with electronic music, Teatro Praga’s Timon of Athens will deal with the relationship between capital and love, examining the way in which gold and feelings go hand in hand and feed off one another, and how money and art can become confused with one another.
