This short theatrical piece (which will be put to the music of countless composers, including J. Haydn) can be considered a chivalrous reformulation of the “fiabesco” model, and, in some ways, of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. The main motifs of the tale are all brought together here: the journey, the symbolic death, the resurrection, and the final triumph of good over evil. Also running through this work is the man | nature dichotomy that takes on an exemplary meaning in demonstrating the contradictions and misunderstandings in which its protagonists allow themselves to become embroiled.
