In staging Bach’s Passion According to St. Matthew, Romeu Castellucci rejects any attempt to illustrate the work, seeking instead to provide a new meaning for the revelation. In the final analysis, a certain number of situations enable us to make a choice when confronted with the words of the Bible and the profound essence of Bach’s composition. A series of elements arise, one after another, as pure objects of contemplation, without resorting to any technical expedients. They are presented to us as “stones”, capable of condensing an attitude of profound listening. Each of us can decide to give ourselves up to listening, not looking directly, allowing ourselves to become lost or perhaps also being predisposed to feel human suffering.
