Big Bang LX19
Le grand ballet
Zonzo Compagnie & Ictus Ensemble (Belgium)
The year is 1751, the place is Versailles. In the Roi Soleil’s private ballroom, a special ritual is being performed: roughly a hundred guests witness the creation of a new work for viol, continued through the mind of the court composer Marin Marais. The king listens attentively and later, to the surprise of his audience, he gradually begins to move a little. The court have no other choice than to follow what he is doing and to imitate their king. A strange choreography is developed: a kind of mixture between yoga exercises, a baroque court dance and a budding aerobics lesson. An incredible party takes place, performed to the sound of a duet between a viol and an electric guitar. Le Grand Ballet is a musical production without any words, in which the audience is invited to dance. Sometimes the musicians move to the sound of the music, but, at other times, the choreography gains its own life, and they limit themselves to just providing the backing.
