Written in Dublin in 1742, the Messiah is not only Händel’s most famous and important work, but also his masterpiece and his spiritual testimony. This magnificent Christian saga has no impersonations of characters and no dramatic action. However, the grandeur and nobility of this oratorio are allied to a delicious musical freshness, and it has continued to be performed regularly and with great success right down to the present day. Being a meditation about Christ’s birth, life, death and resurrection, the Messiah is nowadays regarded as the quintessential “Christmas Concert”, in which everybody recognises the famous Hallelujah chorus... as well as many other parts. What better pretext could one find to invite the Argentinean conductor Leonardo García Alarcón to return to Lisbon? Once again, he will be conducting the Lisbon Metropolitana Orchestra and an extraordinary group of Portuguese singers.
