Cycle: Portugal and the World: from the Middle Ages to the Contemporary Period

CCB

This cycle is designed to investigate successive periods and contexts, comparing the history of Portugal and its inhabitants with those of other territories and populations. We shall consider different levels of connections, ranging from political links to cultural relations, and including economic ties and the circulation of groups and individuals. Without, of course, forgetting the way in which the Portuguese saw themselves in comparison with others, and how, in turn, the Portuguese were seen by them. Everything continued to change over more than eight centuries of varying historical conjunctures, beginning with the period of the Christian Reconquest in the Iberian Peninsula, passing through the time of the Discoveries and Conquests in Africa, Asia and America, and continuing right up to the present-age of European Integration. The overall picture that is painted in this cycle is also an opportunity to re-examine some already formed ideas and to propose new interpretations for these.
