In the work that I shall create, inspired by the poetry of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, I shall begin by instilling into the creative process the feeling that her poetry arouses in me, inciting the dancers to display amazement and to allow the sensation experienced inside our ontological conditions to irradiate moving images that, intertwined with the laws of the inner gravitation of dance steps, appear as a transfigured substance. And, since each step is the slow or accelerated sequence of the previous step, it is through the chain of all these linked together that the work is built up, expands and gains its own life. This is the moment when the dance technique, by being there, is diluted in the machinery of the body and the strength of the muscles to allow the initially instilled emotion to show through. Here, it is the moment when the choreographical discourse is assumed as a metaphor. Let us imagine the fragile figure that “dances around the suspension”; a group of anguished people, huddled together within a minimal beam of light; the flight that passes through the space propelled by the impetus of a leap; the character that slides to the floor down an imaginary ramp; the one who hugs people to talk about love, or who, in a gesture of abandonment and despondency, just simply allows himself to fall. Saint-Exupéry said, one day, about men, “(...) Only those are men who have been beautified by a song, poem or prayer, those who find themselves built on the inside (...)”. This is the path that we shall be following in choreographing this work: experiencing, on the inside of our conditions as artists, the echo of Sophia’s poetry, and allowing ourselves to beautify and build in the visible world of dance. – Vasco Wellenkamp
