Rebel Without a Cause (1955) by Nicholas Ray

This is the film that turned James Dean into an American film icon and is also the most timeless of all the films directed by Nicholas Ray. It is a mythical portrait of American youth in the postwar period, a generation that was marked by solitude, anger and frustration. Jim Stark (James Dean) is a troubled and delinquent juvenile whose parents are desperately trying to set him on the right path in life. When he arrives in Los Angeles, Jim falls in love with Judy (Natalie Wood), although he has to vie for her affections with Buzz (Corey Allen). The irreverence of young people and their desperate need for self-affirmation end up taking this rivalry to the most tragic consequences.
