New mermaids: myths, rites and sayings

Caroline Bergeron (curatorship)

Fábrica das Artes | for every childhood

At this exhibition, curated by the honorary mermaid Caroline Bergeron, we shall plunge into the vast world of the new mermaids of Alcochete and together we shall swim through the founding myths of this species:

– The “Armilages” – the intimate organic diaries of the mermaids, containing their personal and collective story: the specimens exhibited were taken from “The Archives”. This is the group of armilages from mermaids that have already disappeared, and which represent the most valuable collection illustrating the culture of this people;

– Portraits of mermaids, originally painted with cuttlefish ink on cuttlefish bone, but more recently painted on the commonplace plastic bags that have invaded our homes and oceans;

– Extremely rare recordings of the language of mermaids, their songs and the sounds of their habitat;

– Images of “mermaid-grottoes”, the peculiar habitat of this people, made from a material that is sensitive to feelings, expanding or shrinking, depending on how they feel about their neighbours;

– Illustrations, water-colours and drawings of the mermaid Kru, which document his passage through Alcochete and his peculiar way of looking at our world.
