Since its premiere at Vienna Burgtheater in 1921, the play finished by Kleist in 1811 did not stop to thrill audiences, always wrapped up in controversy.

Frederick Arthur, Prince of Homburg, dreams with glory. He walks somnambulant in the
Palace garden, on the eve of the Fehrbellin battle. Still sleeping, he puts in his own head places a crown of laurels, and he’s found this way by the Elector of Brandenburg and their Court. Making fun of him, the Elector imposes the Crown. From this seemingly innocuous joke will flow a drama of unexpected consequences. Thus was born the plot of the last piece by Heinrich Kleist, written a few months before his death. Written in Prussia at that time occupied by the Napoleonic army, Kleist considers it a "patriotic drama", although his immature protagonist, cowardly and clumsy, did not return to his country a flattering picture of itself.
