SMALL AUDITORIUM - EDUARDO PRADO COELHO ROOM
Mauricio Kagel, Argentinean composer naturalized German, composed for a typical ensemble of the Buenos Aires’ ballrooms (nine musicians, including percussion) eight pieces, each one dedicated to one of the eight cardinal points. When he decided to write this series, the composer had in mind his unusual position in the occidental context. Kagel was born in Buenos Aires into a German-Russian Jewish family, but at the age of 26 he moved to Germany, in Cologne. Born in the southern hemisphere, North did not mean cold for Kagel, but rather the mercilessly sun; on the other hand, South represented the gelid cold of Patagonia and Antarctica. In this Wind Rose, Kagel introduces contradiction and originality that characterises his music, proving to be a surprising composer, full of humour and imagination.
