Written in 1795, when Haydn was living in the English capital, the Symphony No. 104, also designated as London, is one of the strong reasons why Haydn has been considered the father of the symphony and the master of the Viennese Classicism, together with Mozart and Beethoven. Richard Strauss began the composition of An Alpine Symphony in 1911, while waiting for a more definitive Hofmannsthal’s libretto, which would become his opera The Woman without a Shadow. This Symphony recalls the adventure of a journey in the impressive Bavarian Alps, from dawn to sunset, through its brooks and waterfalls, and evoking the mist, the storms and the sights at the mountain top.
