The Portuguese Chamber Orchestra, under Pedro Carneiro's direction, features A Midsummer Night's Dream by Mendelssohn, with the participation of a special guest: the actress Beatriz Batarda.
Celebrating the summer, the Orquestra de Câmara Portuguesa (Portuguese Chamber Orchestra) features the score by Felix Mendelssohn, Midsummer Night's Dream, by William Shakespeare. The work’s overture was conceived when the composer was only 17 years old, although it was only finished in 1843, near the end of Mendelsshon’s life. Mendelssohn composed the initial chords of the piece after listening to the night breeze that gently quivered the leaves in his garden. This overture projects the listener to a magic forest, filled with fairies, elves and spells. To help unravelling the mystery, the actress Beatriz Batarda will recite excerpts of Shakespeare’s play used by Mendelssohn in his score.
