Estimated length: 2H45 with intermission
The Theatremaker, in the German original Der Theatermacher, is undoubtedly one of Thomas Bernhard's most successful and most regularly performed plays. It already belongs to the author's phase of “dramatic maturity", being written in the first half of the eighties. .
Having as the leading character an old actor belonging to the National Theatre touring in the province, The Theatremaker is a tragicomedy where reflections on art and the theatre serve to speak of politics, life, absurdity.
"The actors performing always give a false representation. Therefore, it is a lie, my dear Sir, and that is exactly what the theatre is for. What is performed is a lie and we love the lie performed. It was like this when I wrote my comedy, pretending. We perform it , pretending. It is received like this, pretending. The writer is pretending, the performer pretends and the spectators also pretend and all this together is an absolute absurdity, if not to say that it is a perversity of thousands of years. The theatre is a perversity of thousands of years which humanity is crazy about, and is so crazy about it as it is crazy for its lying and its pretending, and in no place in humanity is the pretending greater and more fascinating than in the theatre."
