On November 20 1910, Count Lev Tolstoy Nikolaievich dies in the station of Astapovo, prostrated by pneumonia. By that time he was 82 years old and one of the most famous figures of Russian and international literature. Author of books as striking as Anna Karenina, The Kreutzer Sonata, The Death of Ivan Illich and Resurrection, it was mainly through the monumental novel War and Peace that Tolstoy went on to posterity. Christian, pacifist, anarchist, Tolstoy was all this and none of these things in a pure state. A unique figure in the world literature evoked during one day – one hundred years after his death.
