Starting up a partnership between CCB and Casa da Música, more than 100 musicians from two Portuguese orchestras will stage this evening. The programme presents diverse ways of approaching jazz in a symphonic perspective, from the pioneering experiences of the 20s, with George Antheil’s Jazz Symphony, to Carlos Azevedo’s new compositions, written deliberately for this project, and also two pieces by two famous composers: Leonard Bernstein and Toots Thielemans. It is a proposal that mingles fluidity and freedom of improvisation with the wealth and the rigour of the written music; and it is only possible thanks to the genius of major performers such as Jason Moran and Chris Cheek, prominent international jazz figures.
