It’s not common an ensemble presenting itself as a fusion of Pink Floyd and Ornette Coleman: it’s the Fundbureau, a trio created in Amsterdam comprising the Norwegian guitarist and composer Stephan Meidell, and two Portuguese, the double bass player Hugo Antunes and the drummer Luís Candeias. Energetic (Candeias played heavy metal) but subtle (Meidell appeals frequently to electronics and clearly gets a kick out of sonorous landscapes and bruitage), it’s in Antunes’s double bass where Fundbureau’s music finds its most solid jazz anchor.
