“Simplicity is precisely the way”
(François Fénelon, True and False Simplicity)
For All is the outcome of the monitoring made by the director Dina Campos Lopes to the first Projecto Respira in the 07/08 school year. Under the direction of Aldara Bizarro, professionals from diverse artistic areas and students from the sixth grade had the opportunity to participate together on an artistic experimentation process and on the creation of a professional dance performance.
This film presents an examination on the project, raising issues about the linking between art and education, on how simplicity may contribute to human and social innovation. The Projecto Respira bonds artistic experimentation to the creation of a dance performance. Students from the sixth grade and professionals from diverse artistic fields participated in its construction. Started on the 07/08 school year, the project will hold its third edition this year. This film is an examination on the development of the first Projecto Respira, monitored by the director Dina Campos Lopes.
The starting point to this documentary film has been the quest for the right value of simplicity and its contribution towards human innovation. The French philosopher François Fénélon’s words in his text True and False Simplicity invite us to see the Projecto Respira’s creation process based upon the simplicity concept. According to this philosopher, to accept what we are - not aspiring to perfection – shapes and defines true simplicity. When these young people retake a contact with the body – the primary essence – we are referring to simplicity, the restitution of the fundamental.
The simplicity is also in the process, in the simple act of turning complex issues into simple ones, preserving however their significance. Working on "the making of" and the return to the body allows a discovery of the true that exists inside of each one. These crucial aspects seem obvious, but these creative processes are often required to emerge as a revelation, giving rise to something new. To Dina Campos Lopes, this creation process is a process of social innovation. In face of an existing academic discourse that states there is no social innovation in our societies, leading to the necessity of creating new “innovation actors”, this documentary film shows us exactly the opposite: they exist, and to present their work is enough to demonstrate it. Her film is part of a wider research project initiated by Jangada de Pedra.
The goal, besides documenting the Projecto Respira and its construction process, is to generate a reflection on the issues raised by a project of this nature and to contribute to the construction of new ways of doing it. What would happen if we could interfere with creation regarding people's lives? And if the body would come back to the core of the learning process? What are these new bridges built between students, artists and the community? These and other issues will be discussed after the film projection, in a chat oriented by Paula Varanda, with the presence of Aldara Bizarro and Dina Campos Lopes.
